Thunderbird Park is a wonderful place full of huge totem poles, located in Victoria, in the Canadian region of British Columbia. It is next to the Royal British Columbian Museum, where native Canadian masks, jewellery, and costumes can be seen. The park opened in 1941 and features both historical and modern totem poles. Traditional totem poles were made for various reasons, often to tell stories or remember historic events. They are carved from cedar wood and decorated with figures and symbols, then painted in bright colours. Thunderbird Park has a great collection of totem poles, though not the world's tallest, which is in Alert Bay, British Columbia, standing 56m tall and made from two tree trunks.
