As I was cycling home from school yesterday, I was feeling pleased because I didn’t have any homework. I thought about what I would do that evening instead. I was so busy trying to decide how to spend my free time that I missed the end of my road and cycled twenty minutes before I realised I stopped near my friend’s house, so I went to visit him and we spent the evening playing computer games.

Формы Past Continuous описывают действие, происходившее в тот момент (was cycling); Past Simple — завершённые события и состояния в прошлом (didn’t have, missed, realised, went). После was busy используется trying.
