Mount Everest
Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. It is part of the Himalayas and lies on the border between Nepal and China. Everest is 8,849 metres high. The first people to reach the top were Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa from Nepal, in 1953. Since then, thousands of climbers have tried to climb the mountain.
Climbing Mount Everest is very difficult and dangerous. The air is thin and very cold, and strong winds often blow. Many climbers need oxygen tanks to breathe.
