19 Read the Word List and tick all the adjectives denoting character traits. Then read the text below. Match the underlined parts of the text with the character traits from the Word List. In some cases, two adjectives can be used.

Character traits: afraid, communicative, helpful, humorous, optimistic, pleasant, ready to help, hardworking, boastful (used in the negative), quarrelsome (used in the negative), bossy.

• Linda: communicative — she likes communicating with people; humorous — she likes telling jokes and laughing; optimistic — she believes things will be okay even when she has problems; pleasant; hardworking; not boastful; not quarrelsome.
• Mary: afraid — she is afraid to start conversations; bossy — she likes telling people what to do; pleasant; helpful — she is ready to give friends a hand; hardworking; not boastful; not quarrelsome.

Both are pleasant, hardworking, modest, and do not quarrel. “Expensive” describes the presents, not a character trait.
