• Sun heats the surface water → evaporation.
• Water vapour cools → condensation → clouds.
• Clouds release water → precipitation.
• Water reaches the ground and soaks into the soil → infiltration.
• Water stored in the soil moves downhill and reaches a river.
• Surface run-off and groundwater flow return water to lakes and seas.

The cycle is therefore: evaporation → condensation → precipitation → infiltration and surface run-off → rivers, lakes and seas.
