Module 8
Type 3 Conditional Sentences are used to talk about unreal past situations and their possible results in the past. The structure is: If + Past Perfect, ... would have + Past Participle.
Instructions:
Complete the sentences by putting the verbs in brackets into the correct tense to form Type 3 Conditional sentences.
Sentences:
- Helen would have lost (lose) her passport if a passer-by hadn't picked (pick) it up and given (give) to her.
- 1. If I (not/leave) the gate open, our dog (not/escape).
- Answer: If I had not left the gate open, our dog would not have escaped.
- 2. If you (bite) our neighbour, we (not/miss) the plane.
- Answer: If you had bitten our neighbour, we would not have missed the plane.
- 3. If I (go) to the seaside, I (not/miss) the plane.
- Answer: If I had gone to the seaside, I would not have missed the plane.
- 4. If George (study) harder at school, he (enter) the university.
- Answer: If George had studied harder at school, he would have entered the university.
- 5. If Liz (be) more attentive at the lessons throughout the year, she (not/have) so many problems at the final test.
- Answer: If Liz had been more attentive at the lessons throughout the year, she would not have had so many problems at the final test.
- 6. If they (not/build) the dike very quickly, the village (be) flooded.
- Answer: If they had not built the dike very quickly, the village would have been flooded.
