Margot had lived on Earth before, so she remembered the sun and could describe it, while the other children had seen it only once, nine years earlier. The children hated Margot because they were jealous of her memories and because she was different from them. They behaved like wild animals because the sunlight made them extremely excited after years of living underground. The raindrop frightened one of the girls because she had never experienced rain before and did not understand what it was. The children did not let Margot out because they were cruel and jealous, and they remembered her only when the rain began and the sun had disappeared again.
