Why people get scammed

Ever since the early days of the internet, people have
1fallen for online scams. But why do we do it?
There appears to be a number of reasons to do with human psychology.

One thing is greed. We all want to get rich quick and
2open up we want to believe in a great new offer. And
as soon as we've input some personal details we realize
there's no 3undo button.

Another, which is common in online dating, is trust. We
may appear to 4hit it off with a person who is really
interested in us and keeps us chatting. By gaining our trust
we may even 5open up to this complete stranger
about our life relatively quickly. Then they'll take the
opportunity to ask for money and we'll be 6picked on
to their situation. The next thing we know, they've
7deleted their fake profile picture and we never
hear from them again.

Then there's giving back: the feeling that if someone does
something for us, we need to repay them in some way.
8consistently, this quite a common method scammers
use. They do something free for us because they are looking
at the bigger picture and 9eventually they'll get far more
from us than we got from them. This could be as little as
10sympathetic a link to agree to some financial obligation.

So, if you don't want to feel 11actually by the
scammers, make it difficult for them and be careful not to fall
into the usual traps!
