Last year, I studied abroad at a high school in France, where school lunch was a four-course meal that lasted for an hour. There was a starter, a choice of two (a) dishes, a cheese course and a (b) dessert! As an American, I was amazed at how different French (c) main courses were from what I was used to back home. Instead of a (d) school meal, there was a self-service cafeteria or 'self' as they called it. I didn't see any typical American options like burgers and chicken nuggets on the menu. There was always fresh bread on the table and only water was available to drink. Once a week, the (e) canteen served for the main course were vegetarian to encourage students to eat less meat. There were no (f) snacks in the school - they have been prohibited in French schools since 2005 to stop students from buying junk food and unhealthy (g) fast food. Very few students brought (h) packed lunches from home either. Of course, outside school things are different (i) vending machines is very popular with young people in France, just as it is in other countries. In fact, France has the second highest number of McDonald's® restaurants in Europe after Germany!
