  1. Livingstone was a Scottish doctor. He learned African languages and spent many years living in Africa. He loved Africa, but he was also worried about the people there. He discovered the slave trade, and spent a lot of time telling the British about it.
  2. In 1843 Livingstone was attacked by a lion but, before it died, it almost destroyed his left arm. Livingstone put maggots on his arm to eat the dead flesh! Livingstone was often ill with malaria. He was the first person to use a thermometer to learn his body temperature. He also received 'quinine' – a medicine which was good against malaria. It still saves lives today.
  3. Livingstone became a gold medal for crossing Africa from west to east. He discovered the Zambesi River in 1851. In 1866, he went to look for the source of the Nile. (Another one!)
  4. While he was exploring, Livingstone disappeared for months. People thought he was dead. An American newspaper reporter, Henry Stanley, went to look for him. It took him over a year. He found him in a small village in 1871. He walked up to him and said, 'Doctor Livingstone, I presume*!' He became a good friend of Livingstone's and they travelled together to Lake Tanganyika in 1872.
  5. When Livingstone died in 1873, his followers carried his body 2,500 kilometres to the coast. The journey took five months, and ten men died on the way. Livingstone was a hero to the British, and they put his body in Westminster Abbey* in London.
