Wind, rain, snow, fog, frost and sunshine are signs of the constant shifting of the lowest level of the atmosphere. This continual change is called the weather. The weather changes in four main ways: movement, temperature, moisture content and pressure. The average weather in a particular area is called the climate.

The atmosphere forms blocks of air called air masses. A front is the boundary between two air masses. When warm and cold air masses meet, the lighter warm air rises over the cold air and creates a low-pressure zone. This can produce storms. The front breaks into a warm front and a cold front. A warm front may bring gentle, steady rain. After it passes, there is usually a brief pause. Then the cold air drives sharply towards the warm air, forcing it upwards and creating huge clouds that bring heavy rain and a thunderstorm.
