From the boy scouts to the baggy-pants gangsters with their caps tipped sideways, today everyone wears the baseball hat for anything. (1)___ What an invention! (2)___ They shield one's eyes from the sun. And it is a convenient place to show off a logo, if you have one. In 1954 baseball players could pick a hat they wanted, just to keep the sun out of their eyes. (3)___ The first baseball hats were made of straw. They were first worn by a New York team. (4)___It had a picture of a crown. That soon became the prototype for one of the most popular styles of that time and still today. (5)___The top of the crown displayed a star design, and it cost anywhere from around one to two bucks, depending on the grade of wool. (6)___ A designer Jesse Burkett experimented with baseball hats featuring a transparent, green-tinted bill that shielded the player from the sun. It was also much easier to see the ball. (7)___ The turn of the century saw new innovations, with uniform caps displaying a team's emblem and the first to do this was the Detroit Tigers. And of course who could forget the "pillbox" cap. (8)___But after a short period of unsuccess the Philadelphia Athletics caught on. (9)___To support the reputation of the hat Connie Mack's club won four American League pennants and three World Series Championships wearing it. (10)___So much that it became the Senior Circuit's anniversary trademark. National League clubs wore it in celebration of the season, and it continued to be worn into the next decade. a) And it certainly made the style famous. b) A baseball cap with this kind of logo was worn by all richest clubs. c) And that year it all began. d) They are not only stylish, but functional. e) They began to credit their luck on the look of this cap, and this made it extremely popular. f) Sometimes you can see this material in the windscreens. g) Poor players would buy a cap made of lesser quality flannel. h) But in a few years the team began to wear a cap made of wool. i) Unfortunately, his idea wasn't a hit. j) It is also quite expensive to produce it this way. k) That's how much baseball hats are now a part of the American culture. l) This was a baseball hat that didn't exactly make a splash at first.
