How did samurai gain their status and sustenance?

Initially, samurai were part of the retinues of large feudal lords. Later, feudal lords began to grant them land allotments with peasants in exchange for service. This allowed samurai to be sustained not by spoils of war or provisions from their lord, but by the labor of dependent peasants on their allotted lands.
