The Bottle on the Beach

Helen and Mike live in a little flat in the middle of a large city called Manchester. They like the city because it's big and exciting, but they also enjoy trips to the countryside, away from the noise and traffic. One morning they got an email from Uncle John. 'Come and visit me in my new house,' he wrote. Uncle John's house was next to the sea, far away from the city.

The following Saturday Helen and Mike were on a train on their way to stay with Uncle John. A few hours later they arrived at a small train station. Uncle John met them, and they all walked to his new house. The house was near the beach. It had a wonderful view of the sea. Inside Uncle John's house was very interesting. There were lots of paintings and drawings on the walls and other interesting things to see. There were some nice shops next to his house. On one side there was a bakery. It sold delicious cakes. On the other side there was a lovely café.

Helen and Mike stayed with Uncle John for five days. Every day they swam in the sea and played on the sand. One day they went for a long walk along the beach. At the end of it there were some rocks. They climbed over them and they found another, smaller beach. They walked along the smaller beach.

Suddenly Helen cried, 'Look there, Mike! What's that in the water?' They went closer. 'It's a bottle. A very old bottle,' said Mike. 'And there's some paper in it!' Helen opened the bottle and took the paper. 'Wow!' said Helen and Mike together. 'It's a map!'
