Maly Theatre in Kogalym

The town of Kogalym in Urga was founded in 1971, but it has a cultural history that is far older. That's because its main theatre, Maly Theatre in Kogalym, is a branch of the famous Maly Theatre in Moscow, which was founded in 1806. In 2015, a decision was made to build a branch of this theatre in Kogalym, and the building was completed in 2019.

The theatre is located in the centre of Kogalym and has seating for around 320 audience members. Although it is smaller than Maly Theatre in Moscow, its appearance is very similar. Both buildings have the same neoclassical architectural style and the same wall colours both inside (white and gold) and outside (white and yellow). Even the stage, orchestra pit, chandeliers and curtains in Kogalym look similar to Maly Theatre in Moscow!

Maly Theatre in Kogalym doesn't just look like its twin theatre, though. It also has the same high standards as Maly Theatre in Moscow. Firstly, it has state-of-the-art equipment, including modern lighting and sound systems, and a staff of highly-qualified technical assistants, wardrobe masters and set designers. Also, the talented actors that perform in many of its plays come all the way from Maly Theatre in Moscow. They rotate between Moscow and Kogalym, and even have permanent apartments in the town where they stay. In fact, many of the plays that are performed in Kogalym feature exactly the same actors, sets and costumes as in Moscow.

On 22 March 2019, Maly in Kogalym opened its door to the public for the first time, and the first play that was performed there was Alexander Ostrovsky's comedy Enough Stupidity in Every Wise Man. Since then, dozens of classical and modern plays have been performed at the theatre, for both adults and children. Also, the theatre has held screenings of films, concerts, and acting master classes.

Maly Theatre in Kogalym has quickly become a centre of culture in Ugra. In fact, because of this theatre, some people call Kogalym the cultural capital of Western Siberia. It gives residents of Ugra the chance to enjoy the high-quality productions without needing to leave their region. So what are you waiting for?
