Helen was born in 1880 and she was a sickly child. At the age of one she got ill. After that her life couldn't be the same – the illness left her completely blind and deaf. When she was six she met Anne Sullivan and from then on she relied Helen's teacher and later her friend. Anne taught Helen how to communicate with tactile sign language. Eventually the girl could connect the words and the objects they symbolised. That was a breakthrough. Helen Keller graduated from Radcliffe College of Harvard University. She was the first deaf and blind person to get a Bachelor of Arts degree. She became an inspiration and a symbol of hope for thousands of people with disabilities all over the world. Her story is another example that people who are deafblind can communicate and live a full life.
