• 1. The fire fighters were called in to save the people from the burning building. (This means they were asked to come and help.)
• 2. The match was called off due to bad weather. (This means the match was cancelled.)
• 3. The floods in the Philippines call for immediate action. (This means immediate action is needed.)
• 4. John called on last Saturday to have lunch with us. (This means John visited us.)
• 5. The doctor called on my grandmother to check if she was OK. (This means the doctor made a formal visit.)
