The History of Pilgrims
Thanksgiving Day, celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday of
November, dates back to the early 17th century when a group of people, known as
Separatists, looked for a place where they could practice their religion freely. 102
people left England in 1620, aboard a ship named "The Mayflower", setting off a
voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to the place which they called New England.
When they arrived in America, the Pilgrims faced challenges as they settled in
unfamiliar environment during the winter months. Many faced hardship and loss, as the
cold climate and lack of food caused sickness among the settlers. Fortunately, local
Native Americans taught the Pilgrims farming techniques as well as how to catch fish
and gather edible plants, which ultimately led to their survival in this new world.
As the spring arrived, the Pilgrims celebrated their first successful harvest with a
feast in 1621, which is now known as the first Thanksgiving. This occasion marked
their gratitude for food and the spirit of cooperation between the Pilgrims and the
Native Americans. Today, the legacy of that first Thanksgiving still brings families
and friends together each year to share meals and express thankfulness.
