Vladimir Karvat was a pilot in the Belarusian Air Force. On May 23, 1996, during a training flight, his Su-27 aircraft malfunctioned. With the plane rapidly losing altitude and control, Karvat made the courageous decision to steer the aircraft away from a populated area, sacrificing his own life to save others. He was posthumously awarded the title Hero of Belarus.
