American Indians Indians were the first people to live in what is now the United States. In 1776, when the United States became a nation, there were almost 250 tribes. Different tribes lived in different kinds of houses, different clothes, different food, different games, and spoke different languages. The Sioux tribe lived on the Great Plains. They used horses to hunt the buffalo. The Sioux Indians did not paint red skin. No Indians did. The colour of their skin went from very light to deep brown. Most Sioux Indians were tall and thin.
