In the early days the people living in different parts of the country saw very little of each other, for there (1) were no railroads in those days and the roads were very bad.
So it took weeks to go a distance that a fast train now (2) carries one in a few hours.
In (3) that early days most of the people were farmers. They lived on their own little farms.
Almost everything that they needed (5) they (4) raised or made on the farms.
Then railroads, steamboats, and all kinds of machinery (6) appeared.
Of course, the towns grew much (7) larger, so that now millions of people live in cities and big towns.
And good roads, automobiles, and fast trains (8) made it very easy for people living in the country to travel from one destination to another.
More and more, we (9) are acquainted with each other.
