Для каждого предложения попробуем подобрать разные модальные глаголы, которые передадут схожий смысл, но с разными оттенками значения (возможность, запрет, обязанность, совет и т.д.).
1. You are not allowed to enter the room.
- You mustn't enter the room. (Прямой запрет)
- You can't enter the room. (Невозможность или запрет)
- You are not permitted to enter the room. (Формальный запрет)
- You may not enter the room. (Формальный запрет или отказ в разрешении)
2. It's my duty to walk the dog.
- I must walk the dog. (Сильная обязанность)
- I have to walk the dog. (Внешняя обязанность или необходимость)
- I should walk the dog. (Рекомендация, моральный долг)
- It is my responsibility to walk the dog. (Прямое указание на ответственность)
3. You are not obliged to attend the seminar.
- You don't have to attend the seminar. (Отсутствие обязанности)
- You aren't required to attend the seminar. (Отсутствие требования)
- You are free to not attend the seminar. (Свобода выбора не посещать)
- It is not necessary for you to attend the seminar. (Отсутствие необходимости)
4. Perhaps Bob will go to the meeting.
- Bob might go to the meeting. (Возможность, вероятность)
- Bob may go to the meeting. (Возможность, разрешение)
- Bob could go to the meeting. (Возможность, но менее вероятно, чем might/may)
- It's possible that Bob will go to the meeting. (Прямое указание на возможность)
5. Is it possible for you to give me a lift to work?
- Can you give me a lift to work? (Прямая просьба о возможности)
- Could you give me a lift to work? (Более вежливая просьба)
- Would you be able to give me a lift to work? (Просьба о способности/возможности)
- Would you mind giving me a lift to work? (Вежливая просьба, спрашивающая о неудобстве)
6. It's necessary for you to tell your parents what happened.
- You must tell your parents what happened. (Сильная рекомендация или обязанность)
- You should tell your parents what happened. (Совет, моральный долг)
- You ought to tell your parents what happened. (Похоже на 'should', но чуть более формально)
- It is necessary that you tell your parents what happened. (Прямое указание на необходимость)
7. Let's buy Jane a CD for her birthday.
- We should buy Jane a CD for her birthday. (Рекомендация, предложение)
- We could buy Jane a CD for her birthday. (Предложение, вариант действия)
- How about buying Jane a CD for her birthday? (Предложение в форме вопроса)
- Why don't we buy Jane a CD for her birthday? (Предложение в форме вопроса)
8. I was able to play the piano when I was 15.
- I could play the piano when I was 15. (Способность в прошлом)
- I managed to play the piano when I was 15. (Успешное выполнение действия, возможно, с трудом)
- I succeeded in playing the piano when I was 15. (Успех в действии)
- I had the ability to play the piano when I was 15. (Прямое указание на способность)
9. It's a good idea to put on your coat.
- You should put on your coat. (Совет)
- You ought to put on your coat. (Совет, рекомендация)
- You had better put on your coat. (Более сильный совет, с намеком на возможные негативные последствия, если не послушать)
- It would be advisable to put on your coat. (Формальный совет)
