The next day the miller and his daugh- ter were in the palace. The King led the girl into a room where there was a lot of straw. "Now begin working," said the King. "If in the morning there is no gold here, you must die." With these words, the King left the room and locked the door behind him. The miller's daugh- ter had no idea how to spin straw into gold and she began to cry. All at once the door opened and in came a dwarf [dwo:f]. The little man asked why the girl was crying and agreed to help. But he wanted to have the girl's necklace for it. In the morning the King arrived. He was surprised and delighted to see so much gold. But he wanted more. So he led the miller's daughter to a second room, much larger than the first one. It, too, was full of straw. When the girl was alone, she began to cry. In a moment the door opened and the dwarf came in. Again he agreed to help but wanted the girl's ring for it. The King arrived at sunrise. He was happy to see so much gold in the room. He looked at the girl and promised to marry her but he wanted to get more gold. After the girl entered the third room and after the King locked the door, she began to cry. But soon the dwarf appeared and promised to help.
