3rd September 1666
Yesterday I worked hard all day, making I cakes for King Charles II. At one o'clock in the morning, my wife 2 shouted, 'Tom! Tom! The house is on fire!' It was true! The hot, angry fire was in all the rooms. Everyone was very 3 frightened. In minutes the next house was on fire too. I shouted to the children and they came into our bedroom. There was only one answer. One by one, we jumped out of the 4 window into the street. Our poor maid* Susannah cried. She said, 'I'm frightened! I can't jump!' It was so sad. She died in the fire. We ran to the river. I tried to get a cart* but they were very 5 expensive. They cost £30) (50 euros.) At the river, there were hundreds of people in boats. We found a boat and started to leave. People watched the fire from the river and cried. Everything was on fire - all the houses, churches and other buildings. Saint Paul's cathedral came down as we watched. We've got some money. But we haven't got a house. And we haven't got any 6 clothes. What are we going to do now?
