What happens to Ichabod after he leaves the party at Van Tassel's farm?

After leaving the party, Ichabod is chased by the Headless Horseman. He is never seen again in Sleepy Hollow, and it is presumed that he fled the area, possibly after a frightful encounter with the ghost.
