When I was at the school, language learning was different to what it is now, and my experience was been probably quite different to what my parents had. I remember them telling to me how dull learning a language was in their day, with long lists of verbs to be learnt and lots of repeating after the teacher. Native speaking teachers they were rare, and often the pronunciation they had learnt was wrong and they had a trouble making themselves understood when they travelled abroad. My own lessons were a bit more interesting. We learnt phrases to make use in real-life situations such as like ordering in cafés and buying train tickets. Nowadays students are encouraged as much as possible to be flexible in their approach to a foreign language. There are many native speaking teachers who make it more easier to learn about another country.
