There are many interpretations of the ending of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," but my personal belief is that Brom Bones played a trick on Ichabod and scared him away. The story is presented as a tale told by a narrator, and the ending itself is ambiguous. Ichabod Crane is portrayed as a superstitious and easily frightened individual, prone to believing in the supernatural. Brom Bones, on the other hand, is known for his mischievous nature and his rivalry with Ichabod over Katrina Van Tassel. It is plausible that Brom, disguised as the Headless Horseman, orchestrated the entire encounter to frighten Ichabod away from Sleepy Hollow and secure Katrina's affections for himself. The pumpkin that Ichabod's headless assailant throws at him, which is later found "sound and solid" the next morning, suggests it was a prop rather than a supernatural weapon. Ichabod's disappearance and subsequent lack of return further support the idea that he fled in terror, perhaps eventually finding a new life elsewhere, far from the haunts of ghosts and rivals.
