The Great Wall of China Dear Anna, I've just come back from China, and the most impressive thing I saw was the Great Wall. It is one of the greatest wonders of the world. The Wall is over 20,000 kilometres long and was built more than two thousand years ago. At first it was made to protect the country from enemies, but now it is a symbol of Chinese history and culture. We visited a part of the Wall near Beijing. It was very high and steep, with thousands of stone steps. Walking up was difficult, but the view from the top was fantastic. We could see green hills and valleys stretching far away. Our guide told us many interesting stories about how soldiers lived on the Wall. They used to keep watch from the towers and send messages with smoke signals. Today the Wall attracts millions of tourists every year. Some parts are well restored, but others are in ruins. There are even marathons held on the Wall!
