I felt nervous when the phone rang. It was a shrill, insistent sound that cut through the quiet of the afternoon. My heart pounded in my chest as I reached for the receiver. Who could be calling at this hour? A wave of unease washed over me as I brought the phone to my ear.

"Hello?" I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Is this Emily Carter?" a stern voice asked.

"Yes, speaking."

"This is Officer Davies from the local police department. I'm calling to inform you that your brother, Mark, has been involved in an accident."

The words hit me like a physical blow. "An accident? What kind of accident? Is he okay?"

"He's been taken to the City General Hospital. I advise you to come as soon as possible," Officer Davies said, his voice grave. He then provided me with the details of the hospital and the ward where Mark was taken.

I hung up the phone, my mind reeling. Mark, my younger brother, was all I had left in the world after our parents passed away a few years ago. The thought of him being hurt, possibly even in danger, was unbearable. I grabbed my bag, car keys, and rushed out of the house.

The drive to the hospital felt like an eternity. Every red light, every slow-moving car seemed like a deliberate obstacle. My thoughts raced, imagining all sorts of terrible scenarios. What if he had a serious head injury? What if he never walked again? I tried to push the worst possibilities out of my mind and focused on the hope that he would be alright.

When I finally arrived at the hospital, I ran through the corridors, desperate to find Mark. I located the ward and approached the reception desk, my voice trembling as I asked about my brother.

"Mark Carter?" the nurse said, consulting her computer. "He's in room 302. The doctor is with him now."

With a shaky breath, I made my way to room 302. I paused outside the door, gathering my courage. Then, I pushed it open and stepped inside.

I saw Mark lying in the hospital bed, his face pale and his arm in a cast. Standing beside him was a doctor with a kind expression.

"Emily!" Mark exclaimed, relief flooding his face. "Thank God, you're here!"

"Mark!" I rushed to his side, tears streaming down my face. "What happened? Are you okay?"

"I'm going to be fine," he said, managing a weak smile. "I was on my motorcycle, and a car ran a red light. I managed to avoid a head-on collision, but I broke my arm."

I sat down beside him, holding his hand tightly. "I was so worried," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "I don't know what I would do without you."

"Hey, it's okay," Mark said, squeezing my hand. "I'm here, and I'm going to recover. We'll get through this together, just like we always do."

As I sat there with Mark, I realized that the sound of the phone ringing had not just brought me fear and anxiety, but it had also reminded me of the deep bond we shared as siblings. And as long as we had each other, we could face anything that life threw our way.
