**The Importance of Coral Reefs**
Coral reefs are often called the "rainforests of the sea" because of their incredible biodiversity. They
provide a home for thousands of marine species. Reefs also protect coastlines from storms and
erosion. Furthermore, they support fishing and tourism industries, which are vital for many
economies. However, coral reefs are under threat from climate change. Rising ocean temperatures
cause coral bleaching, which makes the corals expel the algae living in their tissues and turn white.
If the water stays too warm for too long, the corals die. Pollution and overfishing also damage these
fragile ecosystems.
