This species became extinct more than 300 years ago. Dodo birds lived on an island in the Indian Ocean. When European sailors first landed there, they saw a lot of slow- moving birds who did very little to protect themselves from hunters. Sadly, the birds' meat turned out to be good for eating. So very soon there were no more dodos. You will be able to see this bird only in a picture. By the way, the bird's name "dodo" comes from the Portuguese word for "stupid". That's what people thought about the birds that couldn't help themselves to survive. The dodo bird has become a symbol of an endangered species Dodos died out three centuries ago. The dodo's habitat was a piece of land with water around it. Dodos were not safe from people. Dodos were easy to kill. Portuguese sailors gave the bird its name.
