I am going to write a short story describing a nasty holiday experience (Я собираюсь написать короткий рассказ, описывающий неприятный опыт во время отпуска).

A travelling magazine and its readers/judges will read it (Его будет читать журнал о путешествиях и его читатели/судьи).

It will be about a negative experience that happened during a holiday (Он будет о негативном опыте, который произошел во время отпуска).

I should write between 120-180 words (Я должен написать от 120 до 180 слов).

My narrative will be in the first person (Мой рассказ будет от первого лица). (Так как описывается личный опыт: "nasty holiday experience they had", и обычно в рассказах о личном опыте используется первое лицо.)

The writer sets the scene by describing the time, place, and main characters (Автор задает сцену, описывая время, место и главных героев): "During my summer holiday, my friends, James and I, were travelling across the USA... we decided to take a journey on a steam train..." (Во время моего летнего отпуска мы с друзьями, Джеймсом и я, путешествовали по США... мы решили отправиться в путешествие на паровом поезде...).

The climax event is when the train came out of a tunnel and swung making its way down a hill, and a loud screeching noise was heard, followed by a huge rock hitting the carriage, trapping a man (Кульминационным событием является, когда поезд выехал из туннеля и качнулся, спускаясь с холма, и был услышан громкий скрежещущий шум, за которым последовал огромный камень, ударивший в вагон и зажавший человека).

In the end, the train slowed down (В конце поезд замедлился), the rescuers came (прибыли спасатели), and they received news that the man had been hurt, but not seriously (и они получили известие, что мужчина пострадал, но не серьезно), and that the driver was well (и что машинист был в порядке).

The characters felt terrified (Герои чувствовали себя в ужасе) ("we were in for a terrifying experience", "people started screaming frantically", "we were relieved to hear that no one had been hurt") ("нас ждало ужасающее приключение", "люди начали неистово кричать", "мы испытали облегчение, услышав, что никто не пострадал").

Steve could never expect his weekend trip would end like this. It was last Saturday afternoon (Это был прошлый субботний полдень). My friend, Matt, and I decided to go camping last Saturday afternoon. We had been looking forward to the trip for ages. The weather was beautiful, and we were driving to a quiet spot near a lake. Everything was going well until we put up our tents.

Suddenly, the sky went dark, and the wind began blowing hard. It was raining heavily, and soon, a massive storm hit our camp (1). Our tents were violently ripped apart (Наши палатки были сильно разорваны), and we had to shelter in our car. Eventually, the rain stopped (2).

When we got out, we saw that our whole camp had been washed away (Когда мы вышли, мы увидели, что весь наш лагерь смыло) by the flood (3). We felt absolutely terrified and sad. As soon as we could, we packed the little we had managed to save and drove slowly back home (4).

We were relieved to have escaped the storm, but we were still upset about losing all our gear. That was definitely the nasty holiday experience of a lifetime!
