Russian Winter Festivals
Russia has several wonderful winter festivals. The most popular are New Year, Christmas and Maslenitsa.
New Year is celebrated on the night of December 31. Families decorate a New Year tree, prepare festive food and give presents to one another. At midnight people watch fireworks and wish each other happiness. Children often enjoy a visit from Ded Moroz and Snegurochka.
Orthodox Christmas is celebrated on January 7. Many people go to church, spend time with their families and share a festive meal. Christmas carols are traditional songs performed during the holiday season.
Maslenitsa marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. People make and eat pancakes, visit friends, enjoy folk music and dance. In some places there are fairs, games and sledging. The festival ends with the symbolic farewell to winter.
Music makes these celebrations especially joyful. People sing New Year songs, listen to folk music and dance to lively tunes. One famous New Year song is “A Little Fir Tree Was Cold in Winter” (“В лесу родилась ёлочка”).
