7. Why was St Mercurius chosen to be a patron saint of the city? Why is it so important for the city to have a patron saint?

According to the legend, Mercurius prayed before the Virgin Mary’s icon and fought the Tatars, helping to save Smolensk. He was therefore declared a saint and became the city’s patron saint.

A patron saint is important because people can pray to him for protection and help, especially in difficult times. He also represents the city’s history and spiritual identity.

St Mercurius saved Smolensk from the Tatars; a patron saint gives the city spiritual protection and represents its identity.
